About Bharat BillPay

The Bharat Bill payment system is a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) conceptualised system driven by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It is a one-stop ecosystem for payment of all bills providing an interoperable and accessible “Anytime Anywhere” Bill payment service to all customers across India with certainty, reliability and safety of transactions.

Bharat BillPay - The One stop destination for all recurring payments has multiple modes of payment and provides instant confirmation of payment via an SMS or receipt. It offers myriad Bill collection categories like electricity, telecom, DTH, gas, water bills, etc. and also other repetitive payments like insurance premium, mutual funds, school fees, institution fees, credit cards, fastag recharge, local taxes, housing society payments, etc. at one single window. An effective mechanism for handling consumer complaints has also been put in place to support consumer regarding any Bill related problems in Bharat BillPay.

About Hackathon

Bharat BillPay Hackathon I3 Ideate – Innovate – Implement is an endeavour to invite budding entrepreneurs, fintech, start-ups etc. to create new solutions for the BBPS Platform and its stakeholders. It is an excellent opportunity for growing developers to come up and explore new avenues that would grow Bill Payment Ecosystem in India. The ideas can help in bringing new innovation to Bharat BillPay Ecosystem and benefit multiple stakeholders.

Bharat BillPay regularly envisage to facilitate new and innovative avenues in bill payments. In lines to the same Bharat BillPay invites developers who can develop new solutions to participate in an interesting and engaging Hackathon. Get ready and ideate to revolutionize India's bill payments ecosystem. Brainstorm in teams or research individually to come up with innovative ideas to scale up Bharat BillPay.



Traditional way of payments i.e. Visiting Collection points of Billers

Overview: Today, the majority of the utility bill payments occur at the biller’s collection point which could be going either to the biller touch-point standing in line for bill payments or visiting multiple biller websites, leading to consumer inconvenience, loss of travel time and effort. Bharat BillPay enabled touchpoints (digital or physical) enables customers with a highly interoperable service of paying multiple bills at one single point.

Task: Provide a solution to enable the BBPS platform extension to Biller Collection Points for easy consumer payments or new innovation to leverage the touchpoints for easy conversion

Unavailability of Billers on front end platforms

Overview: Multiple merchants/billers go live in the Bharat BillPay ecosystem weekly. It is a tedious and time-consuming process for the customer-facing apps/websites or retail agents to consume huge data frequently and display it on their front-end platforms. Some of the apps/websites enable them immediately, some take months for the enablement. This leads to a lack of visibility of certain new merchants/billers on the front-end platforms and eventually restricting customers from paying the bills for new merchants.

Task: Provide a solution to make billers available at all touchpoints instantly across multiple touch-points.

No provision to check the number of platforms with unavailable Billers

Overview: Currently, 250+ digital channels (Apps/Websites) and million physical touch-points have been powered by BBPS and the list continues to grow. It is difficult to manually know the number of digital platforms and physical touch-points that have enabled the live billers on weekly basis.

Task: Provide a solution to instantly check the count of digitally powered Bharat BillPay app/websites or physical touch-points that have enabled all the billers.

Faster enablement of Billers & Fintech/Startups

Overview: Onboarding of sub-entities on the BBPS platform like Billers, Fintechs and Startups involves multiple steps and dependencies on BBPOUs-the main members to on-board on the BBPS Platform. This involves API Integration, Finalisation of Commercials, Testing & Go-live. Due to high dependency, some of the fintech and startups take time to get on-boarded on the BBPS platform.

Task: Provide a solution to enable faster onboarding of fintech/startups/service providers/merchants on BBPS Platform.

Dependency to provide ClickPay links to customers

Overviews: Currently the billers send ClickPay link via their own applications or through their Fintech partners. Every Biller has their own systems and platforms to send the Paylink. Billers are also dependent on Biller BBPOUs (BOUs) to create a link and send it to their customers

Task: Propose a solution to have a tool that can enable easier creation and distribution of links to the customers via merchants/billers
