Granular Deep Learning

Granular Data is a Machine Learning startup attempting to re-imagine the way in which we view the economy. Why? In today’s world, traditional methods of evaluating economies are broken. While surveys and top down approaches were effective in the 20th century, they fail to capture the complexity and volatility of today's global economy. They are particularly ineffective in the context of emerging markets, where there is a constant need for current and in-depth data, and little government ability or will to supply that data.

Granular.ai is looking to provide an alternative view on economic development using unconventional data and machine learning.

Can you use satellite imagery to “nowcast” economic trends?

Background

In 2017 commercial satellites will capture data from every point on earth, every day. This data will be available at 10x the resolution and 1/10 the cost it was just a few years ago. The proliferation of satellite imagery presents an opportunity to radically change the way in which we monitor the world and its inhabitants. Already, governments and companies are monitoring the effects of global warming, crop health, and war zones. Furthermore, (and perhaps more relevant to this competition!) people have begun to explore using these images to monitor oil and mineral resources, urbanization, factory output, trade and shipping, and much more.

This analysis is enabled by advances in Deep Learning, specifically in a field sometimes referred to as Machine Vision. In the past few years, deep neural networks have begun to outperform people in image process tasks. We want to take the same technology that power self driving cars and Facebook’s facial recognition to create tools for economic empowerment by providing deep, real-time optics of emerging market economies.

This competition is open to people of all skill levels, but only people with prior knowledge of deep learning will be considered for the full time position. That said, we will reward creative ideas :)
