The technology ecosystem is well acquainted with unicorns – a start-up valued at over $1 billion. However, there is another breed of unicorns in the technology world – women coders. Any developer meeting will have a room full of men, with, may be a handful of women present, if at all. There have been numerous studies and researches on the subject of getting more and more women into STEM courses. If you look at the statistics on the subject, the number of women in software development is alarmingly low.

But merely shedding light on the matter won’t solve anything. And it’s not just about gender parity or diversity issues, but to bring to the table newer perspectives and thoughts and ideas to the table by bringing in more women to the developer table.

In India, there is just one female engineer for every three male engineers. And out of the 5 million developers currently in India, only 18 % are women. This is an appallingly dismal number! We, as essential parts of the ecosystem, have to take tangible steps to bring in more and more women into the field. As part of this endeavor, Zinnov is excited to announce its first edition of a hackathon, exclusively for women coders, through which we hope to inspire more young women to take up coding.

The event is set to take place on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2018, in Bangalore. We anticipate participation of around 35-40 teams from engineering professionals and final year engineering graduates. Apart from winning cash prizes of ₹150,000, ₹100,000, ₹75,000 for the first three spots respectively, the top 4 contestants will be given an opportunity to be part of a panel discussion at Zinnov Confluence 2018.

Themes

India Stack

Touted by Bill Gates as “India’s shining beacon of technology to propel change,” the India Stack presents unprecedented opportunities for every player in the technology ecosystem. Structured as a set of APIs builton Aadhar data of a billion-strong population, this Stack, allows governments, businesses, start-ups, and developers to utilize this unique digital infrastructure to solve India’s problems at scale - with the end goal of moving the country towards presence-less, paperless, and cashless service delivery. The resultant infrastructure needs of the largest functioning API on the planet has opened up vast opportunities involving multiple technologies namely cloud storage, data security, data warehousing, besides opportunities in mobile payments to cater to the third largest smartphone user base in the world. A digital operation on such a scale, never before conceived, has room for many unique contributors.

India Stack provides 4 distinct technology layers –

Presence-less layer

Where a universal biometric digital identity allows people to participate in any service from anywhere in the country

Paperless layer

Where digital records move with an individual's digital identity, eliminating the need formassive amounts of paper collection and storage

Cashless layer

Where a single interface connects all the country's bank accounts and wallets to democratize payments

Consent layer

Which allows data to move freely and securely to democratize the market for data

Women Security

Fact: About 35% of women across the world experience some form of abuse or physical violence.

Fact: Between 2015 and 2016, the rate of reported crimes against women saw an increase of nearly 11% in India.

With the incidence of assaults and crimes against women on the rise in India as well as globally, women’s safety has taken center stage. Regardless of the social, cultural, and geographical subtexts, safety of women in today’s context is a multi-dimensional conversation. However, with the emergence of advanced technologies such as IoT, Big Data, AI, ML, et al, there are newer use cases being explored, that play definitive roles in women’s safety. Wearable tech, discreet real-time location tracking, designing smarter cities, etc., are some of the use cases currently in use. But how else can these newer technologies aid in women’s safety? What else can be done to empower women and ensure their safety and security, regardless of where they are in the world, or what strata of society they belong to? Is there a way to make these use cases accessible to every woman?
