Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Technologies have been the enablers demystifying questions like "where am I?", "how do I reach my destination?", "am I in a safe surrounding?"; "where do I land and how do I land?", "how can I communicate from my aircraft with the ecosystem to which i belong?" etc. and questions centered around these basic needs of an aviator.
The pilots need to be involved in these operations to ensure their situational awareness, the CNS technologies make sure of this, thereby increasing the safety of flight.
Communication is an essential pre-requisite for safety in aviation industry, it includes both verbal and written forms for "pilot to pilot" and "pilot to ATC". Though very effective many of these practices are not in sync with the current technology, design, accessibility standards which could result in lesser safety. Your challenge here is to use innovative and coming of the age technologies and new media design paradigms to ensure the safety of flight is improved from the current standards which can be released within the next decade.
Aircraft Navigation is the art and science of getting from a departure point to a destination in the least possible time, it includes general process of planning, recording and controlling the aircraft. Navigation methods have improved drastically over the past few decades reducing on air collisions, ensuring the flights follow the standard paths without breaking any laws or compromising the safety of those on-board. The solutions here should utilize innovative technologies to ensure flight navigation is made more effective than the current stages and they can hit the market within the next decade.
Surveillance systems comprises of Weather RADARs, air traffic and terrain data. The ATC works closely with the pilots to make sure collisions are avoided and take off and landings are done in a smooth way. The Weather RADAR ensures pilots are aware of the weather conditions in order to avoid turbulence and ensure the flight is smooth, the EGPWS ensures that even in poor visual conditions the pilots are aware of the terrain and gives warning on time to ensure there is not damage to the aircraft. The current systems have problems with safety and reliability as some of the technology cannot make way into the aircraft due to the sheer weight of the machines and certifications. The submissions in this sphere should make sure the safety of the surveillance systems are improved by using new media designs and coming of the age technology which can be released in the next decade.
