Over the next few years, climate change coupled with a growing population that is expected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050 will have a dramatic impact on our world and will disrupt our already fragile ecosystem. By 2030, 65% of our population will face a shortage of power and water. Energy consumption is growing at a staggering rate and is projected to increase by as much as 55% by then. This is primarily due to the combined effect of population growth and a dependency on energy-intensive lifestyles.

Trends such as urbanisation that requires water-intensive activities are putting pressure on already scarce resources. The availability of clean and affordable water for everyone on the planet is becoming a major challenge. It is reported that by 2050 at least one in four people will be affected by water stress and severe water shortages.

It is up to us to find ways to simultaneously preserve the environment and drive development to ensure that future generations have a better world to live in. Enzen’s sustainability program encourages participants to develop high-quality solutions that can be used to solve water and power related challenges and create a positive impact on the environment.

For information about the timelines of this program, see Timeline and Schedule.

Power

Energy is the building block of life. Today, the two most important issues facing the world are energy security and the environmental concerns. The global energy crisis, coupled with the threat of climate change, calls for innovation in the energy sectors as well as responsible consumption in every country.

41% of global CO2 emissions are produced by the energy sector

We want you to build solutions that create accessible, affordable and sustainable power for everyone.

Water

Water is critical for socio-economic development and healthy ecosystems. Today, most cities have very poor groundwater levels. Lakes and rivers are disappearing because of the need for land to accommodate overpopulated cities. In addition, industrial waste and sewage continue to contaminate water sources.

Over 30% of the population face water scarcity for at least one month in a year

We want you to create efficient water systems or practices that drive sustainable water usage, provide access and maximise conservation efforts.

Open Innovation

A million issues impact our environment today. These include overflowing landfills, poor air quality in urban areas, congestion in populated areas, loss of natural vegetation, land contamination, deforestation.

90% of the world’s population breathe dirty air.

We want you to create solutions that address society’s most critical environmental problems.
