Overview

"Hacking is building things that you always wanted to have but no one has built it yet. It's to come up with an amazing idea and work tirelessly on it. It is to fail, fail again and fail better. Try out new things and learn while doing that. It's to work together, collaborate and build things that are innovative. It is to be a better programmer." - HackerEarth

With this idea in mind, VMware will be hosting it's annual VMworld Hackathon in Vegas on Monday, August 27th, 2018. With themes ranging from blockchain to Python and PowerShell, the possibilities are endless and we look forward to seeing the creative ideas that participants come up with. In order to allow participants to have a smooth experience, we have licensed HackerEarth to allow team creation prior to the day of, while also giving teams the opportunity to view themes and judging criteria ahead of time. We hope that this extra time and organization helps ease the stress of Hackathon preparation and makes the experience all-around more enjoyable! Good luck! We can't wait to see your projects in Vegas!

Themes

BlockChain

Judge: Mike DiPetrillo.

Welcome to the VMware blockchain hack-a-thon. During this hack-a-thon we will be exploring powerful use cases for blockchain technologies. The 4 main things that blockchain is good at is data distribution, asset tracking, asset transfer, and verification of information (verifiable claims). Those 4 main pillars of use cases can be used independently or you can combine them into a larger solution such as supply chain. Use your creativity and the power of distributed trust that blockchain provides to build something that could revolutionize an industry.

Pivotal Container Service

Judge: Boskey Savla

Pivotal Container Service (PKS) integrates a Kubernetes stack on top an existing SDDC solution. VI admins can self-service access to development teams working on building cloud-native applications. PKS integrates with vRealize LogInsight, Wavefront and vRealize Operations. Hack away by developing interesting solutions,. Automate Install process via Chef/Puppet/Ansible. Or build an Interesting dashboards for monitoring the stack in Wavefront, LogInsight or vRealize Operations

VMware Kubernetes Engine

Judge: Valentina Alaria

Kubernetes is a popular container orchestration tool. It gives developers a simple API to talk to deploy applications, define scale limits, no. of instances needed and how to publish services via simple YAML file descriptions. Developers can build creative applications using micro-services architecture and move from build to deploy and publish very quickly. Bring your creative hats on and use VMware Kubernetes Engine to build a new application or convert an existing one! See sample apps at https://github.com/kubernetes/examples for inspiration.

Dispatch

Judges: Berndt Jung, Mark Peek

Dispatch is an open source serverless framework targeted towards enterprise environments. Serverless technologies abstract the infrastructure from the developer allowing the develop to focus on business logic and value. Dispatch can be installed on just about any Kubernetes and is available at http://dispatchframework.io. See guides for installing on minikube, GKE or EKS. Show us what can you build when you combine functions, events, API endpoints and services via Dispatch.

PowerShell

Judge: Kyle Ruddy

PowerShell is a task-based command-line shell and scripting language. It is designed specifically for system administrators and power-users, to rapidly automate the administration of multiple operating systems (Linux, macOS, Unix, and Windows), applications that run on those operating systems, and a wealth of other resources from on-premises datacenters to cloud based resources.

This theme is for those hackathon attendees that want to use PowerShell to automate their team to success!

Python

Judge: Steve Trefethen

Python is a popular programming language with a large focus on code readability. Python can be used on most operating systems for any number of things, including programming against any number of things already in your datacenter or cloud-based environment!

VMware Cloud on AWS

Judges: Bryan Wood, Samir Kadoo
