Themes

Driver Empowerment

Problem Statement 1: Driver Earnings Improvement

Problem Statement: Most drivers have a daily earning model and must work long hours to make ends meet. Hence, lack of stable earnings is widespread and affects the livelihoods of many drivers and their families. Common problems:
  •  Uncertain demand
  • Lack of complete visibility of demand
  • Inefficient routing or planning
  • High operational costs
  • Earnings not in sync with effort or operating costs
  • Debt at high interest
  • Health issues impacting earnings

Solution Scope & Deliverables

The ideas can be around new technology, business models, policies, products or service offerings. Few themes of ideas:

1. Better or alternate utilisation of the vehicle & drivers' time (Esp. during off-peak time)
2. Improve earnings through digital enablement & technology
3. Reduce costs (operational, maintenance, interest costs etc.)
4. Ecosystem / Policy initiatives to improve earnings

Problem Statement 2: Financial Well-being of Drivers

Problem Statement: Financial well-being refers to financial security where the driver feels in control of their finances and can meet his current and future financial obligations. Unfortunately, most drivers don't have regular savings or insurance, impacting their ability to meet unplanned expenses like medical bills, vehicle maintenance, or upgrading. Instead, they borrow at high-interest rates, which further worsens the situation. In addition, they plan poorly for future expenses like education or retirement. We need innovative ideas to help them come out of this vicious cycle.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

Solutions should be sustainable and resource-efficient. We would appreciate solutions involving community and participatory involvement rather than adding more burden to Government welfare programs. Broad themes:

1. Financial literacy & planning for Drivers
2. Inculcating savings & investment habits
3. Lending / Credit at lower rates
4. Insurance and Retirement Plans

You can present the problem and your solutions/ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.

Problem Statement 3: Skill Development

Problem Statement: Drivers come from all ages. It is generally evident that drivers who are not millennials are not very technologically savvy. Despite the advances in technology, the apps and features cannot create value unless they are widely adopted by the drivers. Identify ways to digitally enable drivers, so that they can earn on par with fellow drivers.
  •  Driver's resistance to change.
  • Language barriers.
  • Unviable business models.
  • Unengaging content/training.
  • Lack of accountability and monitoring systems.
Solution Scope & Deliverables

Think of solutions that are scalable, sustainable and affordable for drivers. Broad themes:

1. Digital Enablement & enhancing the driving skills
2. Soft Skills (Communication, Customer-centricity etc.)
3. Skills to augment primary income or utilise off-peak time
4. New skills / New professions

You can submit your solutions/ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.

Future of Mobility

Problem Statement 1: Multi Modal Transporation

Problem Statement: Multimodal transportation refers to using multiple modes of transportation, such as metro, buses, autos, cars, bikes, walking etc., to complete a single trip. Though Bengaluru has diverse transportation options, there is scope to improve integration, access, and efficiency (in terms of cost or transit time).

Solution Scope & Deliverables

The goal is to provide a multimodal transportation model(s) which is:
  • Seamless: Integrate multiple modes to make it easy for customers. Solutions can be around ticketing systems, transit between different modes, unified schedules, optimised routes, etc.
  • Connectivity: Improve last-mile connectivity (Eg. from a bus stop or a metro station to the final destination)
  • Efficient: Reduce delays and unexpected wait times.
  • Affordable: Make it accessible and affordable for the masses.
  • Safe: Ideas to improve safety features and infrastructure enhancements.Sustainable : Reduce environmental impact like pollution, wastage management.
Your solution could improve one or more of the above dimensions of multimodal transportation. You can present the ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.

Problem Statement 2: Smart Batching

Problem Statement: Smart batching refers to grouping people with similar destinations and travel schedules to minimise the number of vehicles needed for transportation. The goal of smart batching is to reduce traffic, lower costs, and reduce the environmental impact. Typical problems to be solved include real-time tracking systems, last-mile connectivity, optimal matching algorithms, safety measures, managing peak-time demand, etc.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

Smart Batching's goal is to improve accessibility, affordability and sustainability. The solutions can be one or more of the below:

  • TechPlatfoms: Leverage technology to solve the typical issues in batching.
  • BatchingProcess/BusinessModel: Innovate a new business model or batching process
  • SmartVehicles: Design vehicles that are more conducive for smart batching and/or last-mile connectivity.
  • Infrastructure: Improve / Build infrastructure that will support smart batching.
You can present the ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.

Problem Statement 3: Bengaluru Open Issues

Problem Statement: This is an open challenge. You can pick any mobility-related problems in Bengaluru, ranging from sustainability, traffic, infrastructure, connectivity, parking etc.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

This is an open-ended problem. Please restrict to mobility-related issues. We would appreciate solutions that involve community and participatory involvement of citizens.

You can present the problem and your solutions/ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.
Namma Yatri

Problem Statement 1: Map Cost Improvements

Problem Statement: Maps have made navigation easy. On the one hand, there are premium maps that are accurate but expensive. On the other hand, the inexpensive map products are open but inaccurate, impacting the user experience. Today, maps cost up to 70-80% of the total operating costs of the Namma Yatri app. We need to exponentially reduce the map costs to operate at a zero commission or a nominal subscription fee.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

The primary goal is to reduce map costs. Today, premium map APIs are used in (a) auto-complete locations, (b) calculating distance & fare, (c) finding nearby riders/drivers, (d) navigation support and (e) safety features. Some broad solution themes:

1. Reducing the usage of maps (without adversely affecting UX)
2. Hybrid model of using open and premium maps
3. Crowd-sourced maps (for top lanes/pick-up spots)
4. Leveraging the map feature of users or drivers (instead of the platform)
5. Disruptive innovations to replace maps in some use cases

You can submit your idea as a Product prototype / MVP / Figma / PDF / Video. Additional points for implementing the idea as an open-source program.

Problem Statement 2: Booking Without App

Problem Statement: The ability to book a Namma Yatri auto could open up more demand. Build innovative tech solutions to let customers book an auto without installing the app - E.g. website, WhatsApp, SMS, Phone etc. This will cater to users who are uncomfortable or unwilling to use Apps.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

Namma Yatri is a community-led platform and has a decentralised operations model. Therefore, setting up a large call centre for accepting bookings is unviable. All the Namma Yatri drivers use an open / backend tech platform that can interoperate with any customer-side request. Tech has to solve the booking experience on the user side. Broad solution themes:

1. Web-App / Website based booking
2. Simplified booking using WhatsApp or SMS
3. Direct phone call/contact the nearest driver
4. Any other innovative means for direct booking

You can submit your idea as a Product prototype / MVP / Figma / PDF / Video. Additional points for implementing the idea as an open-source program.

Problem Statement 3: Customer Acquisition

Problem Statement: Out of the Bangalore auto-riding population of 50 lakhs, only 3-4 lakh customers (<10%) have signed up for the product. As of today, product awareness is relatively low. Also, customers are reluctant to try a new app as multiple existing options exist. There is also scope to increase conversions from installs to first rides. Nearly 75% of people who installed the app haven't yet taken their first ride.

Solution Scope & Deliverables

The goal is to increase the number of new users (anyone taking the first ride). Namma Yatri doesn't believe in unsustainable discounts or offers to acquire customers. Given drivers' thin margins, they can't offer free or discounted first rides. Think of growth ideas to acquire new customers cost-effectively and sustainably. Broad themes:

1. Creative Content / Concept / Idea
2. Customers WOM / Referral
3. Drivers as a channel of acquisition
4. Marketing Innovations (Digital or Offline)
5. Product Led Growth
6. Partnership Models
7. Any other ideas including Viral / Guerilla Marketing

You can submit your solutions/ideas as a Video / Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video / Figma.

Problem Statement 4: User Frequency & Retention

Problem Statement: Namma Yatri gives no discounts or incentives towards customer retention or product usage. Also, currently, there are no retention or loyalty programs. Given the competitive intensity, customers use multiple apps, and the usage frequency is lower. E.g. Even the existing customers take only 30-40% of their rides with Namma Yatri and the rest with others. Out of the total installed user base, only 20-25% is active in a given week. Like many B2C apps, Namma Yatri also suffers from high app uninstall rates of 40-50% within 3 days of installation. How do we increase the usage frequency and customer retention?

Solution Scope & Deliverables

The goal is to increase the total number of daily rides from existing customers. Broad sub-goals:

1. Increase weekly active users (out of the total users).
2. Reduce app uninstallation rate.
3. Increase weekly usage frequency.

The ideas can be app marketing or product-led initiatives which are sustainable in the long term. You can submit your solutions/ideas as a Google Doc / Slides / PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Video.
