Overview

Acute Care Nurses are constantly running in and out of patient rooms with information coming at them from many different directions. Conveying and receiving the information needed and attending to the patients’ needs are many times in direct conflict with each other. Enabling technologies like voice recognition and voice control could be used by every nurse to obtain and communicate data with “hands-free” and simultaneously care for the patient.

The Hillrom Voice Hackfest is a fantastic opportunity for developers to collaborate, compete and build scalable solutions with exciting prizes up for grabs!

Join the Slack channel to stay up-to-date with the hackathon and seek guidance from the mentors!

Themes

Hands-free voice controlled Health Assistant

Concept:

A concept enabled by voice recognition that enables users (patient or nurse) to speak voice commands in an acute care setting (i.e., hospital setting) to interact with services through a virtual assistant. Key features of the 'Assistant' system must be as follows:

  • The system must allow the user to log into a secure system, pull up a patient's information hands-free and feed the information to the nurse. Thereby, the nurse does not need to pause their connect or eye-contact with the patient to view that information.
  • The system must the ability to take notes hands-free on the same system.
  • The system should include feedback to the nurse or patient via an audible announcement and optional display at the point of care.
  • For example, when the nurse logs a patient's vitals, the system should read it back and get it acknowledged before storing the data.
  • The data to be audibly described can be of several types including pictures, videos, charts, graphs, waveforms, numbers, and dates.
  • The system must be intelligent to understand and recognize variations in a patient's voice depending on the status of their health.

Since this involves patient data, the system will need to be secure or have the potential to be as secure as a basic laptop. You are free to be creative; however whatever you present must be possible to do today. Hardware and software must be available today to piece the system together. We are not looking to have to “invent” new technology in order to make your system work.
