Overview

Welcome to the "Edge AI contest by Edge Impulse" global virtual hackathon!

What Is the Edge AI contest by Edge Impulse?

This hackathon challenges students and engineers alike to push the boundaries of innovation by building machine learning models and real-world applications with Edge Impulse. Participants will get the chance to showcase their skills, creativity, and community spirit by designing ML models and deploying them directly to edge devices, turning bold ideas into impactful solutions.

Themes

Edge AI application track

Develop innovative edge AI applications using models trained on Edge Impulse or open-source licensed models. Bring your ideas to life by deploying them on edge AI hardware such as Arduino, ESP32, Rubik Pi, Raspberry Pi, or Android devices, and more—showcasing creativity and problem-solving in action.

Submission Guidelines

In this track, your focus must be on the application, leveraging one or several Edge Impulse models.

  • Projects must integrate at least one Edge Impulse model into a working application deployed to edge hardware (e.g. Raspberry Pi, STM32, ESP32, Arduino, Android app, and more)
  • Model usage:
    • Participants can train a model using Edge Impulse or use existing models.
    • In case of using existing models trained outside of Edge Impulse, the participants must use the Bring Your Own Model (BYOM) feature to integrate them into an Edge Impulse project.
    • In any case, the datasets and models used must be open-source with permissive licenses, including commercial use.
    • In case you are using public datasets add the proper attribution and citation in your documentation.
  • Application innovation:
    • The focus should be on the innovation and practicality of the edge AI application developed using Edge Impulse Studio.
    • The application should solve a real-world problem or demonstrate a compelling proof-of-concept.
    • Feel free to suggest creative solutions (e.g. low-power optimizations, sensor fusion, LLM and real-time inference, and others).

Model development track

Harness the power of Edge Impulse Studio to design and optimize machine learning models for audio, vision, and sensor-based data—with a strong focus on innovation, accuracy, and performance. While open-source datasets can be used as a starting point, participants are encouraged to collect or generate their own data to tailor solutions for real-world use cases.

The ultimate goal: build models that not only perform well but also run efficiently on Edge AI devices.

Submission guidelines

In this track, your focus must be on the dataset and model accuracy.

  • Projects must include at least one trained ML model built using Edge Impulse Studio
  • Dataset quality:
    • Participants must use high-quality datasets for training their models
    • Datasets should be well-documented and relevant to the use case
    • The dataset must be open-source with permissive licenses, including commercial use
    • Participants are encouraged to collect their own datasets
  • Use case:
    • Models should be designed for a specific use case, demonstrating either generalization or a scoped application
    • Models can target classification, anomaly detection, object detection, regression, etc. using data from audio, vision or sensors in Edge Impulse Studio platform
  • Iterations and research:
    • Participants should document their iterative process, including experiments, optimizations, and research conducted to improve model performance
    • Participants should demonstrate how the model was validated
    • A clear explanation of the model pipeline, dataset handling, and rationale behind model choices should be included in the submission

Do I need to pay any money to register for the Hackathon?
ChevronDown
No. You do not have to pay anything to anyone to register yourself for any Hackathon on HackerEarth.
Do I need to have any specific qualifications to be a participant for the Hackathon?
ChevronDown
If you love to code, you are more than welcome to participate in the Hackathon.
How do I submit what I have made for the Hackathon?
ChevronDown
You have to develop the application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.
Do we need to have the entire idea fully working?
ChevronDown
The entire idea need not be fully implemented however, the submission should be functional so that it can be reviewed by the judges.
How is the environment? Will your environment support any language? Will you provide any IDE and DB for us to work on ideas?
ChevronDown
You have to develop the entire software application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.
Does one have to be online and available for the entire duration of the Hackathon?
ChevronDown
No, one does not need to be logged in on HackerEarth or be online for the entire duration. You can develop the application on your local system based on the given themes and then submit it on HackerEarth, on the specific challenge page.
Since there is no specific technology mentioned, are there any restrictions on using number of pre-built libraries?
ChevronDown
There is no restriction to use any language, technology stack, or libraries. You can use any of them to create the web/mobile application.
Do I need to give a demo for the product that I have built?
ChevronDown
If you want you can submit a small presentation or video that demos your submission, however it's not mandatory, and only good to have. In case you are one of the winners, you might be invited to demo your application at a physical event, details of which will be shared with sufficient advance notice.
A fully developed application need to have a solid backend for data storage like SQL, SharePoint etc. since its online, is it accepted to show only the proto type of it?
ChevronDown
Yes it's absolutely fine to submit just the prototype. If you use any database like MySQL or PostgresSQL you can also submit a database dump along with your submission. However you are allowed to submit just the prototype.
If it is a team submission, does that mean all team members will have access to work at the same time?
ChevronDown
Yes, all team members can login from their account and do application submission on HackerEarth.
Who will own the IP(Intellectual Property) Rights to the product that I have built?
ChevronDown
The developer/developers of the web/mobile application will have all rights and own the IP of the product. However, all code needs to be in public domain (open source) so that it can be evaluated by the judges.
