Q. What is the Hackathon about?

A. The International Women’s Day Hackathon is a HackerEarth initiative to inspire and celebrate women who love to code. We want to encourage all women in technology to come and code, and build awesome things in a 3 day online Hackathon.

Q. What are the exact dates and timings of the Hackathon?

A. The Hackathon starts at 12 Noon (Indian Standard Time) on 6th March, 2015 and ends at 11:59 PM (Indian Standard Time) on 8th March, 2015.

Q. What kind of products can I make?

A. You can make either a web application or a mobile application based on any of the four themes for the Hackathon:

  • Productivity

  • Social Welfare

  • Fun/Gamification

  • Multi-Channel Retail

Q. What are the prizes for the Hackathon?

A. The winner gets a Macbook Air. The first runner up gets an iPhone 6 and the second runner up gets an iPad Air. The top 15 also get gift vouchers worth INR 5000 each.

Q. Where do I have to come for the Hackathon?

The International Women’s Day Hackathon is an online event on the HackerEarth platform and hence you can participate in the event from the comfort of your home or office or any other place that has a good internet connection.

Q. How do I register for the Hackathon?

A. You can register for the International Women’s Day Hackathon by filling the registration form at the bottom of the page here: http://www.hackerearth.com/women-hackathon-2015

Q. Do I need to pay any money to register for the Hackathon?

A. No. You do not have to pay anything to anyone to register yourself for the International Women’s Day Hackathon on HackerEarth.

Q. Do I need to have any specific qualifications to be a participant for the Hackathon?

A. If you are a woman who loves to code, you are more than welcome to participate in the International Women’s Day Hackathon. Please note that the contest is not open to programmers of opposite gender.

Q. How do I submit what I have made for the Hackathon?

A. You have to develop the application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.

Q. Do we need to have the entire idea fully working?

A. The entire idea need not be fully implemented however, the submission should be functional so that it can be reviewed by the judges.

Q. How is the environment? Will your environment support any language? Will you provide any IDE and DB for us to work on ideas?

A. You have to develop the entire software application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.

Q. Does one have to be online and available for the entire duration of the Hackathon?

A. No, one does not need to be logged in on HackerEarth or be online for the entire duration. You can develop the application on your local system based on the four given themes and then submit it on HackerEarth Hackathon Arena anytime between 12 Noon (IST) on 6th March, 2015 and 11:59 PM (IST) on 8th March, 2015.

Q. Since there is no specific technology mentioned, are there any restrictions on using number of prebuilt libraries?

A. There is no restriction to use any language, technology stack, or libraries. You can use any of them to create the web/mobile application.

Q. Do I need to give a demo for the product that I have built?

A. If you want you can submit a small presentation or video that demos your submission, however it’s not mandatory, and only good to have. In case you are one of the winners, you might be invited to demo your application at an offline event, details of which will be shared with sufficient advance notice.

Q. A fully developed application need to have a solid backend for data storage like SQL, SharePoint etc. since its online, is it accepted to show only the proto type of it?

A. Yes it’s absolutely fine to submit just the prototype. If you use any database like MySQL or PostgresSQL you can also submit a database dump along with your submission. However you are allowed to submit just the prototype.

Q. Do I have to participate alone or can it be a team?

A. You can either choose to be an individual participant or participate in a team of two.

Q. If it is a team submission, does that mean both will have access to work at the same time?

A. Yes, both the team members can login from their account and do application submission on HackerEarth

Q. Who will own the IP(Intellectual Property) Rights to the product that I have built?

A. The developer/developers of the web/mobile application will have all rights and own the IP of the product. However, all code needs to be in public domain (open source) so that it can be evaluated by the judges.

Q. On what basis will my product be judged?

A. Your product will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Impact of the application built

  • Usability of the application built

  • Novelty of the application built

  • Design and technical aspects of the application built

The decision of HackerEarth and the judges will remain final to all aspects of the International Women’s Day Hackathon on HackerEarth.
