In the last 5 years, the increasing traffic in the city of Bangalore and the decreasing public safety has become a big concern. According to the WRI Cities, Bangalore has a vehicle for every two people leading to severe traffic congestion. About 3.5 lakhs vehicles are added annually which mounts to 1000 vehicles per day. Traffic congestion alone costs Bangalore about 5% of its economic output.

If we look at safety data, from the late 70s, the overall rate of burglary has reduced by a whopping 79%. A lot of this can be attributed to the advancement in home security technology. However, over the same time period, murder has increased by 7% and kidnapping has increased by 47%.

This rapid urbanization has resulted in increased commute times and loss of productivity among the working class, compounding the threat of widening income inequality and recurrent crimes as the urban landscape of the city is fast spreading in all directions.

To answer that,Bangalore City Police, and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation,along with the NASSCOM have teamed up with HackerEarth and WRI Cities to kindle the smart minds of India. We’re conducting a hackathon to build technology solutions for social impact. Urban Hack will be the first-ever smart city hackathon aimed at improving transportation, crime prevention and public safety through the use of technology.We invite all enthusiastic developers to participate in this 32 hours hackathon that will be held both online and offline.

The NASSCOM 10k warehouse in Bangalore will host participants who wish to choose an offline venue, and others can participate online on HackerEarth. Here is the google form link for offline venue confirmation: http://goo.gl/forms/i4bD4cEzpe

The winners of the hackathon will be rewarded cash prizes worth INR 5 lakhs and will get to work closely with the Bangalore City Police and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation to pilot the applications.They will also get to showcase their applications before seed investors and prominent VCs and win an opportunity to qualify for the NASSCOM 10k program.

Supporting this hackathon are IBM and Xerox. IBM is sponsoring the awards for the winners and Xerox is providing participants with access to transport APIs.

Road safety

In India, road accidents account for over 100,000 deaths annually, and over 500,000 serious injuries. This data is from 2013. As per 2014 data, the number increased by 15%, and the trend for 2015 isn’t reducing. There are many factors that are behind road accidents, and data and technology can play a vital role in reducing them. Be it at the driver’s end, where technologies like assistive breaking on cars, or smart cameras on signals or even software for better surveillance; all of these can help in imporving road safety.
What can you build?

Public transport

Public transport is going to be the backbone for any densely populated area. Buses are still going to be able to transport more people from one place to another while occupying a significantly lesser area per person than any other mode of transport. Metro rails more so. How can technology make sure that all citizens are aware of the offering of the public transport? There still isn’t a dedicated inclusive public transport route planner and this is just one of the many problems that can be solved by technology. What do you have in mind?

Women safety

Crime against women is at a nauseating high across the world. Be it on the streets, public transport or even the internet, violence against women is on the rise. However, cyber awareness apps and early warning systems have helped in curbing this problem. However, it is time for technology to step up. How can you employ technology in our day to day lives, to make sure that violence against women doesn’t happen again or at least the offender doesn’t go unpunished?

Crime prevention

If the police were to give you data on all the places where crime happened, and the kinds of crimes that happened, could you figure out the factors that cause different kinds of crime? And once you find out why, can you then figure out an anticipatory solution using technology? Well, the Bangalore police is going to keep up its word about the data. Will you keep yours about the solution?

Easy commute

Did you know that travelling in traffic for an hour everyday for year can cause you the same amount of depression that can come from not having a job? Whether we like to admit it or not, India has a traffic problem. And cities are also vastly changing. What used to be outskirts of many cities, are now fully urbanized, so called heart of the cities. And add India’s dense population, and what you have is a commuting nightmare. However, Indians are already leveraging technology to get by traffic. And now with data from the government, you can make better applications that will help you get by traffic. At what time does what type of transportation make sense for a particular - think along these lines.
