Hacking is building things that you always wanted to have but no one has built it yet. It's to come up with an amazing idea and work tirelessly on it. It is to fail, fail again and fail better. Try out new things and learn while doing that. It's to work together, collaborate and build things that are innovative. It is to be a better programmer.

With that spirit, MCCC, Code for Trenton, and Gomo Education are conducting another of its bi-annual hackathon - THRIVE (January 2018) - and invites all developers and hackathon enthusiasts to participate in an interesting and engaging hackathon.

The primary focus and theme of THRIVE for this session is Disaster Relief & Response, but take into consideration how the other themes fit seamlessly into how you and others can positively affect how we all address disaster scenarios.

Probably, the biggest impact any trend has had on mankind is Social. Social media is transformed almost everything we do today, from staying connected with our friends, communicating with people, doing business, consuming news, learning to almost any other thing that we do in our day to day life, has been impacted by social. So much so, it’s hard to imagine a world not socially connected. But this is just the start, the possibilities are endless on how social can be leveraged to make this world a better, more connected, safer and comfortable place.

Communication in today’s world has drastically changed. With every person being connected with every other person, instantly and through a multitude of channels, they are communicating with ways, previously unimaginable. Build applications that help people communicate better, solving some tangible problems.

If only our judiciary could be more efficient. Why do we need to stand in queues in courts. why do we need to do all the paper work offline in legal system. and Why are we still signing agreements offline. This all can be digitized and the system can be made very simple and effective. Re-imagining how we do our legal work, which can be a nightmare, would make our whole judiciary better and improve all our lives.

In the last 5 years, many offline services have been enhanced by the power of mobile internet. Over the counter ticketing has drastically reduced, with the advent of internet ticketing and fragmented industries, like bus travel have also benefitted from aggregation services. Then came itinerary planning and location based recommendations and before you knew it, there was a whole suite of tech products for the traveller. Now, there are computers on vehicles - some so powerful that they don’t need a driver. Travel technology, coupled with IoT and other already existing technology services can add a lot more value for the traveller. Better enroute recommendations? Or even a simple music player that chooses genres based on a place or people you’re travelling with? There’s a lot that you can do.

Humans, around the world, commute millions of miles every single day. A significant fraction of our day is spent in traveling. Technology has played a very significant role in enabling more people to commute. Be it in the form discovery, aggregation or purchase, technology has redefined the way we commute. Imagine how technology can human experience even better in day to day transportation and commute. What can technology do make public and private transportation much simpler.

Disaster Relief & Response

There are many types of disasters and the threat-space as well as the room for innovation and opportunity are real. The impact that's made by disasters across the world is incredible and terrible, but at the same time, there are fantastic stories of inspiring action with every event. Technology and general innovation has helped save millions of people and improve the way we address future disasters, in-the-moment events, and preparedness planning.
