Hackathon Flow

PHASE 1: APPROACH SUBMISSION

Participants are required to form teams with 1-5 members, and submit the approach that they will use to solve the theme of their choice (given in the Themes section). It is mandatory to submit your approach in this specific PPT format - click here to download the format. If you do not submit your approach in the given format you will not be eligible.

PHASE 2: DATA SOLUTION SUBMISSION
(INVITE ONLY PHASE FOR SHORTLISTED TEAMS)

Shortlisted teams from the approach submission phase will be promoted to the ML Challenge Submission phase. In this phase, team leaders will be sent an invite to solve the problem statement related to the theme that they had opted for in the Approach phase. Teams need to work together on their local systems, but only team leaders will receive the invite to make submissions on the platform. This round will take place in a separate link/ page which will be shared with the team leaders of shortlisted teams when the time comes.

PHASE 3: VIRTUAL PRESENTATION ROUND

Top 10-20 teams will virtually present their solutions to the Sigmoid jury members, who will identify the winning teams. The winners of the hackathon will be announced towards the end of this finale.

Themes

Demand Forecasting

For a myriad of challenges faced by the CPG industry, accurate demand forecasting is the holy grail. From the start of manufacturing till the sales of products, multitude of decisions are impacted by the demand planning. Forecasting demand for products in the market is affected by many reasons that determine the demand. Some of these are endogenous & some are exogenous.

A variety of architectures has been proposed throughout the history of data sciences to solve this problem. Most academics-based architectures fall flat on real-world datasets because of underlying simplistic assumptions which may not pass the test of real-world data.

Candidates are expected to conduct thorough research on the subject of ‘demand forecasting’ and propose best-in-class methods to crack the problem. Teams that cover appropriate width and depth of the topic will make the cut to Phase 2 where they will be expected to leverage their skills & knowledge on the subject to solve a real-world problem statement.

Emotion Detection

In the era of a customer-focused industry, companies are coming up with new ways to understand their consumers. Detecting emotions accurately from the reviews, chats, tweets, blogs, posts, etc. is one such method without explicitly asking the customers. With the advent of new algorithms and increasing computing power, Natural Language Processing (NLP) has enabled us to detect emotions from written text & take action accordingly.

‘Emotion detection’ is one level deeper than the typical sentiment classification problem in the NLP world. In sentiment analysis, polarity (positive, negative, or neutral) is the primary concern, whereas, in emotion detection, the emotional or psychological state is detected. Sentiment analysis is highly subjective, whereas emotion detection is more objective and precise.

Candidates are expected to delve deeper into the ‘text-based emotion detection’ problem by going through multiple articles, research papers and other available literature apart from using their own intelligence. Teams will present the different methods of text-based emotion detection and state-of-the-art architectures to solve the problem and make it to Phase 2 where they will solve a real-world problem statement and create an everlasting impact in the NLP domain.
