Winners are announced.
Due to the current situation with COVID 19, we have decided to conduct the final phase of the hackathon online. The shortlisted participants will be invited to submit their prototype on the hackathon page and present their prototype to NEC through a video conference from the convenience of their current location.
More information will be given along with the announcement of the shortlist
At NEC, we believe and practice embracing open innovation by integrating technology and expertise to create the ICT enabled society of tomorrow. NEC has conducted various hackathons aiming at resolving social challenges in India through technology and in continuation to that we are conducting another hackathon focussed on “Environment”.
Our planet is plagued by environmental problems that deplete natural resources and strain livelihoods, many of which are exacerbated by poor industrial practices. If left unchecked, it can affect livelihoods. Pollution is one of the world’s biggest environmental problem all around the world. China and India have some of the world’s worst pollution levels. Just walking outside literally takes days off of your life and can cause extreme respiratory diseases on exposure to air or water.
In 2018’s Environmental Performance Index India is ranked 177 out of 180. Dragged down particularly by its low score for air quality, it also performs badly on other measures including biodiversity protections.
With advanced technology, we believe that these serious problems can be improved and solved there by providing a better and brighter world to all.
Major problems and current situation in Indian environment:
Through the hackathon, we would like participants to identify the challenges, a factor of problems, analyze them and develop a solution using technologies such as FIWARE and other open source platforms.
Through this hackathon, we would like you to think of a solution on this platform that can solve the current “Environment” problem in India!

Note:
Air pollution in India is caused by fuelwood and biomass burning, burning of crop residue in agriculture fields on a large scale, emission from vehicles and traffic congestion etc. India is the third largest in the emission of greenhouse gases after China and the United States. The severity of air pollution is so much that life expectancy among Indians on an average reduces by 3.4 years while among the residents of Delhi it reduces by almost 6.3 years. We need to think of how we can reduce pollution and make our life better by using technology.
NEC is looking for innvoative solutions to tackle air pollution and build a healthier living environment in India.
Water pollution is killing millions of Indians. More than 163 million people (19.3% of the Indian population) in India do not have access to clean water. This is the worst level in the world. As India grows and urbanizes, its water bodies are getting toxic. It is estimated that around 70% of surface water in India is unfit for consumption. Lack of water, sanitation and hygiene results in the loss of 400,000 lives per year in India.
NEC is looking for solutions to reduce water pollution and increase access to clean water in India.
