Overview

Over the years, man’s main priority has always focused on one thing: making life better. As time progressed, technologies might have improved and changed but the goal has remained the same.

Since 1847, Siemens has stood for innovation by developing innovative, sustainable products and solutions. To fuel our innovative capabilities, Siemens has opened a platform that welcomes students from various engineering colleges to apply their expertise and develop future- oriented solutions using latest technologies.

Themes

You need to attempt only one of the numbered problem statements under a theme that you opt for. Alternately, you can pick the open challenge in a theme. Useful links and relevant data sets have been added in the Help Centre.

Mobility: Faster, Safer & More Convenient

1) Increasingly cities are providing multimodal transport systems. Create an app to help commuters in a multimodal transport setting (taxi/auto [Uber/Ola], bus, metro) to determine the safest, fastest, lowest-cost, most convenient trip with smallest carbon footprint. For a requirement to commute from place A to place B, the app would recommend options. For example, go from A to A1 using Uber, A1 to A2 using a bus, and A2 to A3 using the Metro, and A3 to B using an auto (where A1, A2, and A3 are intermediate points).

Open Challenge: Solve any problem that you think deserves to be solved

Articulate any pain-point faced by commuters and propose a way to solve the pain-point using relevant technologies such as IoT (internet of things), smart automation, and/or artificial intelligence.

Healthcare: Every Challenge is a Chance to Create a Better World

1) There is a growing role for chatbots in reducing the healthcare adherence gap. We want you to go as step further and build a chatbot that strikes up a conversation with users to uncover symptoms and help identify any potential health conditions.

2) Artificial intelligence is being applied in a variety of medical imaging areas. Build a system that detects and classifies cancers from microscopic biopsy images using clinically significant and biologically interpretable features. The system would improve speed in detecting cancers in hospitals while maintaining accuracy.

Open Challenge: Solve any problem that you think deserves to be solved

For many Indians, quality healthcare services are hard to access and difficult to afford. Specify a pain-point faced by patients in India while accessing or availing healthcare services and propose a solution using relevant technologies.

Building Technologies: Smarter Buildings for Smarter Living

1) The demand and price of electricity is continually increasing. Build an app that assists home owners in efficiently controlling their homes. The app should: i) Learn user preferences, schedules, and make recommendations on environmental conditions; ii) Communicate and remotely control home equipment iii) Optimize energy consumption based on time-varying energy tariffs.

2) As buildings become larger, finding your way in them becomes more difficult. Create a system that will help people navigate within a building using relevant technologies.

Open Challenge: Solve any problem that you think deserves to be solved

Articulate any pain-point faced by people in large building and solve the pain-point using relevant technologies.

Digital Factory: Smarter Automation

1) Industrial plants increasingly make use of preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and thereby increase efficiency. Develop a system that identifies likelihood of failure of rotating equipment (for example motors, turbines) based on a stream of sensor data. This can be done by using open source datasets or by simulating the sensor data.

Open Challenge: Solve any problem that you think deserves to be solved

Articulate any pain-point presently faced in manufacturing and solve the pain-point using relevant technologies.

Energy Management: Ensuring a Sustainable Energy Future

1) Power theft is widespread in many countries including India. Create a system that helps identify power theft based on power distribution and usage.

Open Challenge: Solve any problem that you think deserves to be solved

Articulate any pain-point presently faced in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy, and solve the pain-point using smart-grid related technologies.
