Overview

Hacking is building things that you always wanted to have but no one has built it yet. It's to come up with an amazing idea and work tirelessly on it. It is to fail, fail again and fail better. Try out new things and learn while doing that. It's to work together, collaborate and build things that are innovative. It is to be a part of social change.

With that spirit, Lumohacks is conducting a hackathon - Lumohacks 2018 - Canada's Ultimate Health Hackathon and invites all developers, designer, health and hackathon enthusiasts to participate in an interesting and engaging hackathon.

This year, Design Lab is focusing on Military Veterans and First Responders' Mental Health and Wellness.

Themes

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) / Operational Stress Injury (OSI)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault. PTSD has been known by many names in the past, such as “shell shock” during the years of World War I and “combat fatigue” after World War II. But PTSD does not just happen to combat veterans. PTSD can occur in all people, in people of any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-5) American Psychiatric Publishing, 2013

Operational Stress Injury or OSI is a non-clinical term referring to a persistent psychological difficulty caused by traumatic experiences or prolonged high stress or fatigue during service as a military member or first responder.

Depression

Depression, also known as clinical or major depression, is a mood disorder that will affect one in eight Canadians at some point in their lives. It changes the way people feel, leaving them with mental and physical symptoms for long periods of time. It can look quite different from person to person.

Depression can be triggered by a life event such as the loss of a job, the end of a relationship or the loss of a loved one, or other life stresses like a major deadline, moving to a new city or having a baby. Sometimes it seems not to be triggered by anything at all. One of the most important things to remember about depression is that people who have it can’t just “snap out of it” or make it go away. It’s a real illness and the leading cause of suicide. (HeretoHelp, 2015)

Substance Use / Addiction

Addiction is a chronic disease characterized by drug seeking and use that is compulsive, or difficult to control, despite harmful consequences.

Suicide Prevention

Suicide prevention is an umbrella term used for the collective efforts of local citizen organizations, health professionals and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide. Beyond direct interventions to stop an impending suicide, methods also involve: - Treating the psychological and psychophysiological symptoms of depression. - Improving the coping strategies of persons who would otherwise seriously consider suicide. - Reducing the prevalence of conditions believed to constitute risk factors for suicide.

Packman, W. L., Pennuto, T. O'C., Bongar, B., & Orthwein, J. (2004). Legal issues of professional negligence in suicide cases. Behavioral Sciences & the Law, 22(5), 697-713. - Giving people hope for a better life after current problems are resolved

Resilience

The ability to cope effectively with the full range of stressful situations encountered in your work setting. Workers and/or individuals remain psychologically safe in the face of hazards. (Gilbert, Merv. Identifying the resilience needs of BC Emergency Health Service personnel. 2018)
