Over the past decade or so, countries around the globe have made major headway in extending education to the remotest areas of their nation. According to a report by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), the global literacy rate of the population above 15 years in 2016 was 86%. However, thanks to COVID-19, the education industry has taken a major hit due to a huge paradigm shift into online education.

This World Literacy Day, join us in our mission of ensuring access to education for everyone. With this hackathon, we invite the global community of developers to build innovative and technological solutions that can help this industry overcome challenges caused due to the novel Coronavirus.

Virtual Reality

The traditional classroom experience has disappeared; both teachers and students are sure to be, indisputably, missing it. In a classroom, teachers are able to give lessons to their students and clarify any doubts in real-time. For most teachers, it is important to read their students’ body language to see if anyone needs additional guidance or to observe the notorious ones hiding at the back of the class. On the other hand, students miss the entire experience of schools, such as—meeting and hanging out with their classmates or interacting with teachers. On top of that, being deprived of a school-like schedule, students are also missing out on being instilled with a sense of discipline and sincerity at a young age.

  • Develop an AR/VR tool for end-to-end virtual classroom experiences that have a built-in whiteboard for teachers to instruct lessons, write keywords, or invite students to explain concepts so as to make these classes interactive. All content written on the whiteboard gets converted into downloadable e-notes. The tool should allow students to virtually raise their hands and get their doubts clarified on the spot.
  • Build a similar tool that allows teachers to conduct, schedule, invigilate, and evaluate tests online. This cost-effective cloud-based tool should allow students to register for exams, submit responses online, auto-save answers (in case of a weak network), view results once they are announced, and compare their performance with their peers.
  • Propose novel technologies that can assist teachers in tracking the learning progress of each student, allocating daily/weekly assignments, conducting quizzes, and the like.
  • Suggest and build an application to host virtual book-fairs or provide art/dance/music lessons to students so teachers can boost creativity and encourage kids to take up co-curricular activities.
  • Share and execute novel ideas that enable students to engage and interact with fellow students - to share a few moments of merriment.

Learning Management System

Due to an unforeseen shift to online education that most educational institutions were just not prepared for, there has been a lapse in providing a uniform experience to students. Additionally, numerous challenges such as poor internet connectivity, unavailability of necessary devices to attend online classes, and the like - have only caused more hindrance to the entire process.

  • Build an NLP-based engine that scans, converts, and organizes handwritten notes into downloadable content.
  • Create a cloud-based platform for teachers to upload and schedule - notes, flowcharts, diagrams, videos, presentations, and others. Educators should be allowed to plan, organize, and display the curriculum for upcoming weeks for increased transparency.
  • Identify and execute apps that allow different users, such as—students, parents, and teachers—to post questions, reply to comments, and tag relevant subjects and users.
  • Suggest tools/technologies that can train uninitiated teachers/students/parents on how to use various online tools that can help them in conducting/attending lessons, tests, and other classroom activities.
The future of education lies in a standardized curriculum across the globe. Wouldn’t it be great if students can gain additional knowledge on respective subjects by referring to lessons shared by teachers around the world?
  • Propose open-source solutions similar to Wikipedia, wherein educators can share their notes on certain subjects for every grade. The solution should be integrable with an AI-powered bot, which is designed to regulate and remove malicious or age-sensitive content before it is uploaded. Students should be allowed access to download or view the shared content of any course of their choosing.

Operations Management
  • Use Artificial Intelligence to automate the student enrollment process for pre, elementary, middle, and high schools.
  • Develop a forum for guardians to post their questions/grievances wherein the school’s administrative staff can manage, review, and reply to these queries.
  • Build an inventory management system for books and school supplies, wherein the administrator can place purchase orders with vendors, monitor stock movement, and track completed transactions by students/parents.
Open Innovation
  • Build a platform that will allow students to connect with freelance tutors, attend online classes conducted by them, and share feedback for each lesson or teacher. Integrate it with a suggestion/recommendation engine that pulls out details like top-viewed and top-rated lessons which should then be displayed to newly enrolled students based on their interests.

The global economy has been adversely impacted by the pandemic, essentially affecting the underprivileged and working-class the most. In addition to that, minimal network coverage in the remote areas of most developing nations can further disrupt the education of these students.

  • Allow schools to accept donations on behalf of underprivileged students for sponsoring books, school supplies, or devices that can help them continue with their education.
  • Ideate and propose solutions that allow students to learn courses bereft of a reliable network connection.

Since most schools are not operational, students are unable to attend practical laboratories. So, while providing lab equipment for subjects like Chemistry, Physics, or Biology without teacher supervision might be hazardous, schools can allow disadvantaged students to access desktop systems from Computer Science laboratories.

  • Suggest technologies that allow underprivileged students to place requests for the school’s computer systems. This tool should allow administrators to review pending request details, approve or deny them, and initiate the shipment process.
